Janeuary - Black into white

Ukrainian singer Janeuary released her bold new single "Black into White", pushing her musical expression beyond the boundaries of black-and-white melancholy. The track was a remarkable fusion of deep emotions, orchestral arrangements, and a visually striking music video. With this release, the singer opened a new chapter in her artistic journey.

Your music is known for its emotional depth and theatricality. Where do you draw inspiration for your unique style?
I draw inspiration from life itself. Sometimes it’s people. Sometimes it’s pain—and not always physical. Sometimes it’s a fleeting moment that goes unnoticed by everyone else. Sometimes I can’t fall asleep at night because I feel like a “radio receiver” for restless souls who want to speak through me. Sometimes I feel like a seer—because what I write, I later see in reality, much later.

Your songs have been added to hundreds of Spotify playlists, and your work is praised by magazines worldwide. How did it feel when you realized your music was reaching beyond borders?
First of all, I’m truly pleased.
But most importantly, I do all this simply because I can’t not do it. Music is my way of living—not for playlists, not for awards, not for praise or recognition. This is how I breathe. And I will never be able to do otherwise, even if my music remained confined to my modest home studio.

If you could collaborate with any musician in the world, who would it be and why?

In Black into White, you mention moving from black and white to a broader spectrum of colors. What does this shift mean for you personally and musically?
The thing is, all of my dream collaborators are dead... But I communicate with them through my music. And I’m sure that sooner or later, Amy and I will sing together. I know she would like my music.
You understand that the color spectrum is just a metaphor. My listener will see everything and read between the lines. And explaining it to those who are not on the same wavelength as me... Well, it’s difficult and probably pointless.

What message would you like listeners to take away from Black into White?
Look above. :)

What was the filming process like? Was there anything that surprised you or presented an unexpected challenge during production?
In one word: improvised.
Basically, everything went wrong from the very beginning. For example, I was supposed to be alone in the video.
At the last moment, I called my musician when I realized I couldn’t bring my original idea to life.
But in the end... it turned into magic. We all worked as one, from the depths of our hearts. And it is genuine. And priceless, as you can see.

The video feels like a short film filled with symbolism. Are there any hidden messages or metaphors you’d like viewers to notice?
My soul spoke. This monologue had been maturing inside me for a very long time, and it unexpectedly poured out into this video. I never planned such raw honesty. But I regret nothing.
Having the courage to be yourself, even for a little while—that’s my message. Try it, one day.

If you had the chance to film Black into White again, would you do anything differently?
Everything would be different. Completely different. Because you can’t step into the same river twice. And that’s beautiful. That’s PURE art. Because everything has already been filmed. Every idea has already been brought to life by someone else.
The only chance for uniqueness comes when you speak from your soul. When you leave a piece of yourself today.
And tomorrow, we will all be completely different.
